Since joining the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Health Systems Task Force in 2022, Roche has been actively working with other global healthcare leaders to accelerate the transition to net zero health systems.

Below are some of the key initiatives undertaken by the Task Force so far: Along with other members, Roche is in advanced discussions with energy providers in China to scale renewable power across their supply chains that will help to unlock sustainable energy in Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing.

Earlier this year, the Task Force launched joint, minimum environmental targets for suppliers, calling on their organisations to set science-based targets to play their part in decarbonising the healthcare value chain.

In addition, major efforts are underway to develop global frameworks to measure the environmental impact of medicines and healthcare delivery. For example, the Task Force is establishing a standardised approach to determine the footprint of products in a transparent, consistent way. These efforts further testify to Roche’s commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare while improving outcomes for patients and society.

“Protecting our planet has always been a priority of our founding families and Roche. Since 2004, we have made great progress in reducing our own emissions by 77% in tons of carbon dioxide per employee and are working towards zero by no later than 2050. To decarbonise healthcare overall, however, we need initiatives like this to drive action at scale. We are truly working together, openly sharing and learning from each other to accelerate more sustainable healthcare systems”, says Severin Schwan, Chairman of Roche and representative in the SMI Health Systems Task Force.
